In this time of profound reckoning, it is important to reflect on our identities and the identities of others, especially those whose voices are largely absent from our history books.
To that end, we are pleased to share that today we launched a new artwork series plus teaching tools with our partner IllumiNative, a new nonprofit designed to increase the visibility of – and challenge the negative narrative about – Native Nations and peoples in American society. Through these fun, creative lesson plans, over a million students across the United States in the Education Amplifier and At-Home Learners programs will have the opportunity to learn about powerful Native American changemakers who are shifting how Native people are viewed in culture, education, politics, sports, fashion, and aerospace. Students will deepen their knowledge of contemporary Native issues and learn how Native culture and life-ways have shaped our past and are actively shaping our future!
This week we saw a major victory for Standing Rock and all land and water defenders as a federal judge ruled that the Dakota Access Pipeline be shut down because of the inadequacies of its environmental assessments. This comes a day after news that the Atlantic Coast Pipeline running through West Virginia, Virginia & North Carolina has been canceled after protests drew attention to its path through historically Black and Indigenous lands.
